Gynecomastia

Excessive tissue in the male breast (gynecomastia) is a common condition among men. The exact cause is not known, however hormonal changes and obesity play a role. The condition often causes embarrassment at exposing a bare chest during participation in sports or at the beach. There are 2 components to gynecomastia; excess fat and excess breast gland. Frequently the breasts can be properly contoured using lipoplasty techniques for removal of the fatty component. VASER Assisted Lipoplasty (VAL), is an excellent technique for treating gynecomastia with a high fatty content. When most of the breast enlargement is due to the gland component, a small incision on the border of the areola provides easy access for removal of the gland. Massive weight loss can result in loose, hanging breasts that detract from a man’s appearance and in these cases the surgical procedure involves removal of the excess skin along with the excess breast tissue and tightening of the remaining breast skin envelope. Surgery for gynecomastia usually takes between one and one and one half hours. The surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure.
